I hope you got to celebrate in whatever way feels most right to you, whether that’s a big fancy party, a few friends and family watching the Times Square ball drop, or—if you’re like me—strolling to the neighborhood bar for exactly one glass of champagne before coming home to rewatch “Andor” for the ninth time.
My biggest recent announcement: I’ve written a second Austen-inspired mystery novel!
Coming May 16 to a bookstore near you (but you can preorder now): The suspenseful sequel to The Murder of Mr. Wickham, which sees Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney reunited, and with another mystery to solve: the dreadful poisoning of the scoundrel Willoughby's new wife.
I have so much fun writing these books, so I hope you’ll keep having fun reading them!
My travel/appearance schedule for 2023 is still taking shape—there are several possibilities for late February and March that aren’t set in stone yet, so keep an eye out on Instagram/Twitter etc. for announcements. However, I can report two upcoming events, both of them in the New Orleans area:
1) FanExpo New Orleans, January 6-8: This is something of a last-minute add, so I’m only doing one panel on Saturday, 1/7, at 4:15 pm in THEATER #3 - RM 291—a spotlight on me and the awesome Kami Garcia, in which we’ll discuss writing novels and comics and how the two differ, as well as answering any questions you guys may have. I’ll also have a table in Artist’s Alley all three days of the con, where I’ll be both selling books and autographing any you bring from home. My exact appearance times will be posted at my table when the con begins, but I expect to be there for fairly long periods throughout.
2) Blue Cypress Books had so much fun doing a murder mystery party themed to The Murder of Mr. Wickham –and such a quick sellout of the tickets—that they’re doing it again! At 6:30 pm on January 17, I’ll help host yet another night of intrigue, complete with seriously fabulous food and drink. Regency-era costumes are not required but are encouraged (and I was delighted when many people wore them in November!) If you happened to come to the first one, be aware that it’s a different story this time, and a brand-new murderer. So TRUST NO ONE. As of this writing, tickets are still availablehere.
I’m sorry not to have final dates/times on more events; some convention planning just doesn’t get done over the holidays, so hopefully more advance notice will be available going forward. If not, this newsletter may switch from quarterly to every other month—just to make sure you guys get the heads-up in enough time to for you to make plans if I happen to be in your area.
Also, as mentioned in the last newsletter, I’ve finally decided to take the plunge into Patreon; mine has just gone live. That means it’s time to talk media in many forms: movies, TV, novels and comics that I’ve hugely enjoyed (or not enjoyed at all, or just have many thoughts about) and hopefully to discuss in-depth, free from the constraints of the usual social media format. While you can check out all the tiers [at Patreon here], the two offerings I’m most psyched about are:
1) For $5 per month, you are subscribed to receive in-depth media reviews—maybe of one work, maybe more. January’s review will be of “Star Wars: Andor,” and already, I’m not sure how I’m going to restrain myself to less than novella length. (I might not! There is so much to say!) Going forward, the reviews may cover any medium, any genre.
2) If you’re feeling flush, the $20 per month subscription gives you an invitation to my monthly watch party! We’ll chat live while watching a film together: scifi, mystery, period drama, fantasy, whatever. That subscription tier is limited, so I hope to really have some conversations as we go. January’s pick is “The Hunger Games,” which lets us get into topics ranging all the way from from YA fiction tropes to the portrayal of PTSD in film and tv. We’ll watch on the last Saturday of the month, January 28; dates will shift some to accommodate my travel schedule, but you’ll always get plenty of advance notice.
More details about all of the above, as well as the other benefit tiers, are available on the Patreon page! If you’re not so inclined, never fear: The newsletter’s not going anywhere, and it will keep you updated throughout. I’m sincerely grateful to every one of you who cares enough about my writing to stay in touch, however you do it, so thanks again.
Currently watching: “Wednesday;” “His Dark Materials;” and “Andor” over and over and over again
Currently reading:Babel by R.F. Kuang; Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, The Enigma of Room 662 by Joël Dicker
Currently anticipating:Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo; “Poker Face” on Peacock; “Ant-Man: Quantumania” (not gonna lie, mostly for Kang); Spare by Prince Harry; “Wool” on Apple TV
